What is Fungal Nails (Onychomycosis)

Fungal nails are a common condition where the toenails become infected by fungi, leading to changes in color, texture, and thickness. This infection often starts at the edge of the nail and gradually spreads, causing nails to become brittle, discolored (yellow, white, or brown), and sometimes crumbly or distorted.

Causes:

Fungal nail infections develop when fungi enter through small cracks or breaks in the nail or surrounding skin. Warm, moist environments - like sweaty shoes or communal showers - promote fungal growth. People with weakened immune systems, diabetes, or poor circulation are more susceptible.

Symptoms and Diagnosis:

Common signs include thickened nails, discoloration, brittle or crumbly edges, and sometimes a foul odor. In some cases, the nail may separate from the nail bed. Diagnosis is usually clinical but can be confirmed with lab tests or nail clippings analyzed under a microscope. Your foot specialist will recommend the best treatment plan based on the severity and your overall health.
