Flatfeet, or pes planovalgus, is a condition where the arches of the feet collapse, causing the entire sole to make contact with the ground. This structural change can lead to altered foot mechanics, discomfort, and fatigue during walking or standing.
Flatfeet may be congenital (present at birth) or develop over time due to factors such as ligament laxity, muscle weakness, injury, or conditions like arthritis and obesity. Prolonged stress on the foot’s supportive structures can also contribute to arch collapse.
Symptoms can include foot pain, swelling along the inside of the ankle, and difficulty with prolonged activity. Some individuals experience no discomfort but may notice changes in gait or shoe wear. Diagnosis involves a physical exam to assess foot structure and function, often supported by weight-bearing X-rays to evaluate the extent of arch collapse and alignment.
