What are Warts

Warts are small, rough growths on the skin caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). They commonly appear on the soles of the feet (called plantar warts) and can be painful, especially when located on weight-bearing areas.

Causes:

Warts are contagious and spread through direct contact with the virus - often in warm, moist environments like public showers, swimming pools, or locker rooms. People with cuts or broken skin on their feet are more susceptible to infection.

Symptoms and Diagnosis:

Warts may appear as small, grainy bumps with a rough surface, sometimes with tiny black dots (clotted blood vessels) inside. They can cause discomfort when walking or standing. Diagnosis is typically made through a physical exam by your foot specialist, who can distinguish warts from other skin conditions like corns or calluses.
