What is Heel Pain (Plantar Fasciitis)

Heel pain is the most common condition treated by foot specialists, and plantar fasciitis is its leading cause. This condition involves inflammation of the plantar fascia - a thick band of tissue that connects the heel bone to the toes and supports the foot's arch. When the fascia becomes irritated, it results in pain, typically located on the bottom of the heel.

Causes:

Plantar fasciitis usually results from repetitive strain or microtrauma to the fascia. Contributing factors include abnormal foot structure or function, poor footwear, tight calf muscles, high-impact activities like running or jumping, and long hours spent standing or walking on hard surfaces.

Symptoms and Diagnosis:

Patients often report sharp or aching heel pain, especially with the first few steps in the morning or after periods of rest. Pain may also worsen after prolonged standing or walking. Your foot specialist will evaluate your history and examine your foot to confirm the diagnosis and rule out other conditions like fractures or nerve entrapment. X-rays or other tests may be ordered if needed. Once diagnosed, a personalized treatment plan will be created to address both the symptoms and underlying causes.
